Be respectful of other camping organisations
APCNZ is the family-friendly camping club - so be friendly, be polite and don’t degrade other clubs. There are many camping-related clubs in New Zealand, from the well-known NZMCA, to local caravan clubs, cycle and motorcycle touring groups as well as tramping and camping clubs. All these groups endeavour to do the absolute best for their members as we do for our membership. The main difference between APCNZ and these other clubs is that we encompass ALL types of camping from the backpacker to the most luxurious motorhome.
Under no circumstances should committee members or regional representatives make derogatory remarks, comments or statements about any other camping club or organisation.
Supporting Club members
Most of the time, support is provided by answering simple questions. If you don’t know the answer, then ask someone who does or pass the inquiry up the line.
If in your travels you meet other club members, introduce yourself, ask what they think of the Club and what the Club could do better. The sort of things you could ask them are whether:
-
there are places they know about or local events where we could set up a camp
-
they would be keen to help set up events in their area
-
there are any camping areas they would recommend we promote through our Stop and Stay listing.
You can use Hello Club to find out who are your local members. Hello Club offers you the option to send emails to members to introduce yourself, promote upcoming events or to ask about what activities would interest them.
You can also run social events for local members, such as coffee mornings or dinners, as well as camps. The page on organising an event gives detailed guidance on how to do this.
How to respond to the question 'What is APCNZ?'
Some opportunities to promote the club will be planned and some will be opportunistic, like when someone sees the APCNZ sticker on your vehicle. It is helpful to give some thought in advance to what you will say on these occasions.
When you are asked ‘What is APCNZ?’ the simple answer is, ‘We are the second largest and fastest growing national camping club in New Zealand and represent all types and forms of camping'.
What comes next depends on their reply. Most people will show interest and want to know more. Go with the flow of the conversation and don't lecture. You can talk about what All Points stands for and what the Club can provide to its members: club member discounts, club events, advice on camping-related matters and a sense of belonging to a growing like-minded camping family. Give them a club brochure if they seem interested.
If someone expresses interest in joining APCNZ
The simplest way for someone to sign up as a member is for them to click the button on the home page of the Club website or use this link. This will enable them to purchase a membership through the Club shop. There is also a button on the home page for members to renew their membership.
Alternatively, a new member can sign up using this paper form which you can send to the secretary@allpointscampingnz.org. They will also need to pay for their membership. The Club bank account number is 12-3143-0191709-00 and the name of the account is The All Points Camping Club of New Zealand.
APCNZ's services and member benefits
The About APCNZ page lists the range of services and benefits that the Club offers. Here’s some further information that could be helpful when talking about what the Club does.
Member discounts
The APCNZ membership card can be used at many national retail outlets, services and suppliers. Other discounts are available to members, such as Bluebridge ferries. These discounts are listed on the member benefits page and in the Hello Club documents tab. This information is for Club members only.
Stop and Stay
APCNZ has a growing network of Stop and Stay properties. These are places that
have been recommended by All Points members. They include locations where
you can camp on private property, Department of Conservation land, local
authority sites and commercial campgrounds. Most commercial campgrounds
listed on the Stop and Stay website are either low-cost or offer a discount for
All Points members. The Stop and Stay pages have a comprehensive key providing
details about each property and its features.
Members can recommend camping locations to be listed on Stop and Stay by clicking on the box toward the bottom of the main Stop and Stay page.
Camping the Kiwi Way magazine
All Points Camping supports the production and publishing of the quarterly
magazine – Camping the Kiwi Way. All Club members receive an online link
to each issue of the magazine when its published and can read it online
for free.
There is also a printed version of the magazine. Individual copies can be
purchased or an annual subscription taken out (4 issues) by going to this link.
Information about self-containment
APCNZ has a close working relationship with NZ Lifestyle Camping, which is one of the issuing authorities for self-containment. All Points members get a small discount on the cost of self-containment if they use NZ Lifestyle Camping.
Promoting APCNZ on social media
Regional reps and committee members can strengthen the Club’s social media presence by:
-
posting photos and updates during an event
-
commenting on posts on Facebook (don’t just ‘like’ them)
-
posting details of Club events onto local social media pages (eg, community groups, other camping or outdoor groups)
-
writing posts with details of activities near to local Club camps
-
posting visual images, particularly on Instagram
-
using hashtags on Instagram.
This social media guide provides guidance for committee members and regional representatives on how to promote the Club and its events on Facebook and Instagram.
A list of All Points social media locations is provided on the Committee and reps page.
Promoting APCNZ in your local area
You will know your region or local area better than members from other areas and so will have the best ideas of who to contact. Some possibilities are:
-
local owners of camping facilities (such as camping groups, Stop and Stay locations, local or regional council, Department of Conservation)
-
your local council to discuss its freedom camping by-law (if it has one)
-
companies selling campers, caravans or camping equipment or who maintain and repair camping vehicles
-
local businesses selling camping equipment and gear
-
local self-containment officers.
If you are talking to a commercial company and have received a good deal from them, mention the Club and let them know that we can promote their service to Club members and ask if they would be interested in arranging a member discount. If they seem interested in this then contact president@allpointscampingnz.org.
Liaising with local Stop and Stay properties
The Stop and Stay signs at local properties and camping spots are visible part of the All Points Camping network. Regional representatives can enhance this by keeping in contact with existing local Stop and Stay locations and identifying new properties that can be added to the Stop and Stay listings. If you have any questions or suggestions about the Stop and Stay network, contact secretary@allpointscampingnz.org.
